AML, The Lucca Musical Association Presents a Wonderful Chamber Music Season

AML’S WINTER CHAMBER MUSIC SEASON OPENS

In January the 52nd season of the AML (Lucchese Music Association) chamber music concerts starts. These end in March and present ten concerts on Sunday afternoon at 5 pm in the ISSM Boccherini auditorium, Piazza del Suffragio. The program also includes fourteen lectures and film screenings.

The opening concert on Sunday, January 17th features the Metamorphosi Trio, one of the best Italian trios with renowned mezzo-soprano Monica Bacelli, who has sung at La Scala, the Vienna Staatsoper, Covent Garden, with the Berlin Philharmonic, the National Academy of Santa Cecilia and the Concertgebouw with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Daniel Harding, Riccardo Muti, Antonio Pappano, Simon Rattle and Zubin Mehta. It’s a very interesting program with Joseph Haydn’s Trio in E major Hob. XV: 28 and his arrangement of Scottish songs, and Beethoven’s Introduction and Variations in G major, Op. 121a on “Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu” and Scottish song arrangements.

MAURIZIO BAGLINI PLAYS LISZT’S PIANO TRANSCRIPTION OF BEETHOVEN’S NINTH SYMPHONY

In January the 52nd season of the AML (Lucchese Music Association) chamber music concerts starts. These end in March and present ten concerts on Sunday afternoon at 5 pm in the ISSM Boccherini auditorium, Piazza del Suffragio. The program also includes fourteen lectures and film screenings.

On Sunday, January 24th pianist Maurizio Baglini plays Liszt’s transcription of Beethoven’s Ninth symphony. Baglini is among the brightest and most popular musicians on the international scene. He has had an extensive career in Europe, America and Asia with over 1200 concerts as a soloist and in chamber music ensembles.

IVANO BATTISTON AND GABRIELE RAGGHIANTI DUO IN AML’S CONCERT

In January the 52nd season of the AML (Lucchese Music Association) chamber music concerts starts. These end in March and present ten concerts on Sunday afternoon at 5 pm in the ISSM Boccherini auditorium, Piazza del Suffragio. The program also includes fourteen lectures and film screenings.

On Sunday, January 31st  Ivano Battiston and Gabriele Ragghianti (see photo) give a recital with the special alchemy of sound produced by accordion and double bass, two instruments able to produce a fascinating range of colours and ideas. There’s a piece for accordion composed by Battiston and inspired by traditional Balkan music, pieces by Giovanni Bottesini, the great double-bass player who turned the instrument into an effective soloist, pieces by Astor Piazzolla and music by the Bulgarian double-bass player Emil Tabakov. Finally, two pieces by Federico Favali from Lucca. The world is on fire (music for burning bass) for double bass (world premiere) and Aforismi per evocare la terra (aphorisms to evoke the earth). The first piece was written in 2015 for double-bass player Gabriel Ragghianti while Aphorisms to evoke the earth draws inspiration from the reinterpretation Favali made from a fragment by the Lucchese composer Giovanni Lorenzo Gregori (1663- 1740).

Federico Favali is composer-in-residence at the Lucchese Music Association for 2016. After studying piano and graduating from Bologna’s DAMS conservatoire he has had performances of his music in various Italian cities and abroad. After a Master’s degree in composition at King’s College London, he is currently doing a PhD at the University of Birmingham (UK) with Michael Zev Gordon. At the same time he is perfecting composition at the La Spezia’s “G. Puccini” conservatoire under the guidance of Andrea Nicoli.

ALAIN MEUNIER AND NOUS QUARTET AT THE SUFFRAGIO AUDITORIUM

In January the 52nd season of the AML (Lucchese Music Association) chamber music concerts starts. These end in March and present ten concerts on Sunday afternoon at 5 pm in the ISSM Boccherini auditorium, Piazza del Suffragio. The program also includes fourteen lectures and film screenings.

In February, as is the case for some years now, the AML devotes some concerts to Boccherini as part of the “Eighteenth century music in Lucca” project.

On Sunday, February 7th cellist Alain Meunier (see photo), one of the last heirs of the prestigious French cello school, and the Nous Quartet, a young ensemble that in a short time has established itself as one of the most promising Italian chamber music ensembles, winning the Premio Abbiati Italian Music Critics Association prize in 2015 play works by Boccherini and Schubert.

RECITAL BY GIOVANNI SOLLIMA

In January the 52nd season of the AML (Lucchese Music Association) chamber music concerts starts. These end in March and present ten concerts on Sunday afternoon at 5 pm in the ISSM Boccherini auditorium, Piazza del Suffragio. The program also includes fourteen lectures and film screenings.

On Sunday, February 14th there will be a return to Lucca by cellist Giovanni Sollima, an internationally appreciated virtuoso with a world following from classical music lovers to rock fans. Sollima performs Bach, Boccherini and Beethoven (with Simone Soldati at the piano) and his composition, Concerto rotondo.

SERIES OF EVENTS IN HONOUR OF GAETANO GIANI LUPORINI

2016 marks Gaetano Giani Luporini’s 80th birthday. He is a multifaceted artist who has expressed himself not only in music but also in painting and poetry. For this occasion the AML is organizing a series of events organised by Fabrizio Giovannelli and dedicated to the great artist with the title “Gaetano Giani Luporini e la sua arte”. The four events involve the collaboration of Lucca’s Rotary Club.

The event on Wednesday, February 17 at 5 pm, in collaboration with RAI Teche and Cineforum Ezechiele, will highlight the theatrical collaboration of Gaetano Giani Luporini with Carmelo Bene.

On Saturday, February 20 at 5 pm, in collaboration with the “Centro Studi Luigi Boccherini” and G. Caselli, R. Cresti, A. Guidotti, H. Handt, and A. Possenti there’s a meeting entitled “The work of musician, painter and poet.”

On Thursday, February 25, at 5 pm there’s an open lesson on Gaetano Giani Luporini as teacher, in collaboration with the “Boccherini” ISSM, on the Geometrie e inversioni contrappuntistiche treatise by the Luccan composer.

PIANO RECITAL BY GIUSEPPE ALBANESE

On Sunday, February 28th there’s a piano recital by Giuseppe Albanese. Among the most popular pianists of his generation, Albanese has played in all the most prestigious venues in Italy, including the Orchestra dell ’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI. In recent months, Albanese with Deutsche Grammophon has released an extraordinary album dedicated to Liszt, whose music will be part of his Lucca concert.

THE LAURA MARZADORI AND LEONORA ARMELLINI DUO

In January the 52nd season of the AML (Lucchese Music Association) chamber music concerts starts. These end in March and present ten concerts on Sunday afternoon at 5 pm in the ISSM Boccherini auditorium, Piazza del Suffragio The program also includes fourteen lectures and film screenings.

On Sunday, March 6th, two promising musicians return to perform for the AML. They are Laura Marzadori, a young violinist who recently won the competition for first violin at the Teatro alla Scala and the talented pianist Leonora Armellini. The program includes Bach’s Chaconne from his Partita for solo violin no. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004 and Beethoven’s “Spring Sonata”.

CONFERENCE ON “VENUS AND ADONIS BETWEEN MYTH AND LITERATURE”

On Saturday, March 12th there’s a conference on “Adonis and Venus between myth and literature” by the authors of the Morgana series (Maria Pacini Fazzi Editore), with a performance of Britten’s Metamorphoses (see picture) by oboist Elena Giannesi.

CONCERT BY MATTEO FOSSI WITH THE SAVINIO QUARTET

In January the 52nd season of the AML (Lucchese Music Association) chamber music concerts starts. These end in March and present ten concerts on Sunday afternoon at 5 pm in the ISSM Boccherini auditorium, Piazza del Suffragio The program also includes fourteen lectures and film screenings.

On Sunday, March 13th pianist Matteo Fossi and one of the best Italian chamber ensembles, the Savinio Quartet, will participate in a musical afternoon entitled “Il migliore dei cuori, tu, Clara” (“you, Clara are the best of hearts”), a program dedicated to the great artistic and amorous relationship between Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck, including Schumann’s famous piano quintet.

SCHUBERT AND A WINTER’S JOURNEY

In January the 52nd season of the AML (Lucchese Music Association) chamber music concerts starts. These end in March and present ten concerts on Sunday afternoon at 5 pm in the ISSM Boccherini auditorium, Piazza del Suffragio The program also includes fourteen lectures and film screenings.

On Sunday, March 20th there’s a closing concert with “Schubert, a winter’s journey”, an original dramatic piece by writer and music critic Sandro Cappelletto, known to the public for his broadcasts on Rai 5, who will be present as narrator. Along with pianist Simone Soldati (see photo), there’s tenor Marcello Nardis, an artist internationally recognized as an interpreter of this repertoire.
