Museums Surround Us

One of the pleasures in Italy is the increasing effort being given to its museums, many of which for too long have suffered neglect and general apathy. Not so long ago such places as the Stibbert and Bardini museums in Florence were floundering in dust and inattention. Now they are good examples of revalued collections with much improved documentation of their exhibits, more helpful staff and insightful exhibitions.

This reappraisal of many of Italy’s national collections of the country’s inestimable heritage has been encouraged by the appearance of new museums. In Florence, for example, we have the Strozzi Palace with its stimulating exhibitions (see http://www.palazzostrozzi.org/?lang=en), and also the children’s museum in the Palazzo Vecchio (see http://www.turismo.intoscana.it/site/en/highlights/The-Childrens-Museum-Palazzo-Vecchio-Florence/)

It is, therefore, somewhat depressing to note that in London the reverse trend as to opening museums seems to have taken place. There were some excellent places we used to visit on a regular basis which are now closed. Do see my post at https://longoio2.wordpress.com/2015/02/20/going-going-gone/ to find out some of London’s marvellous museums which, apparently have gone, or are going for ever.

In our part of the world there are the following museums still open or open by appointment. In each case I’ve said where they are, what type of exhibits they contain and whether I have a post on them. (Not having a post doesn’t necessarily mean I haven’t visited them!)

The opening times may be subject to change. In any case, it is prudent to phone up and check whether the museum is open.

This is by no means an exhaustive list. I would add the following museums which have recently opened in our area.

Museo casa Catalani, Colognora.

Museo del cavaliere di San Cassiano.

See my post at https://longoio.wordpress.com/2013/07/06/a-nice-way-to-spend-a-sultry-july-afternoon/

It’s a real pity that with all these museums around there’s not a single museum in Bagni di Lucca. There should definitely be a place where one can discover the great history of our comune with regard to its importance as a Spa town.
